Hi-- I just looked over the article Rochelle posted about communicating
with LD and ESL students. The article, in my view, has some excellent
suggestions that, as the authors note, make communicating with both
type of students much more effective and rewarding.

I just want to warn this list to remember that having communication
difficulties does NOT mean an ESL learner has LD beyond normal language
acquisition behaviors (difficulty distinguishing what persons are
saying, processing slowly, etc.).

It is extremely difficult in most cases to know if an ESOL learner has
something we might identify as learning DISABILITIES; it is common,
however, for adult ESOL learners to have learning DIFFICULTIES which
can be the result of a wide range of issues.

I find it regrettable that ESOL learners were lumped with those with LD
in this otherwise valuable article.
