Rich, thank you for the wonderful resources! What a wealth of good, practical information! There is a lot of material on those websites which I will be able to use in teaching and training. Betsy S. The material will still require an instructor, but it does provide opportunities for students to "see" concepts and that may make them easier to understand. The site is free. Projected for classroom use, I'm sure some of the activities would lead to interesting discussions of math concepts. The web site is http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/vlibrary.html Below you will find a link to a handout from a presentation that was made at the PA Making Math Real conference. The theme of the handout is that many difficulties with mathematics are really cognitive difficulties in disguise. If you can identify where the thinking process breaks down, you can teach students the cognitive strategies that will help them to get around those problems in the future. It could easily be used as an observation checklist for diagnostic purposes. Best wishes.
