Hello.
My name is Mary Dow and I am a high school Resource
teacher in Los Angeles. I have enjoyed reading the
many posts about transition and the military since it
is a very relevant subject for me.
On a different note, many of my students with LD will
drop out prior to completing high school, usually at
their 18th birthday. Recommending to them that they
stay in high school until they are 21 is not what they
will be willing to do. Nevertheless, over the many
conversations I have had with these young adults, I am
always aware that their dislike for school is not
indicative of a dislike for learning. My question is,
what are the reading instruction resources available
for them once they leave public high school? Related
to this, what self-advocacy skills will they need to
develop in order to access those resources?
I look forward to any suggestions from the community.
