                NovaNet works on a subscription basis.  In this case it is
beneficial because it is updated every 6 months with many new and revised
lessons, as well as providing online support that the instructor can access
from the student's screen-the NN person helping can see the same thing the
student sees and chat with you at the bottom of the screen about it.  

 

                I don't want to misquote pricing, and I don't know the
answer to the assistive technology question, but both can be answered by
Ruleen White at Ruleen.White at pearson.com .   I can tell you that if you have
a computer lab that is up to date and has a good server, you can receive
NovaNet over the internet for considerably less cost.  We have 17 old
rebuilt County surplus Dells in our lab that work reliably, thanks to a good
tech, but the server issue is keeping us on a T-1 line for daytime
processing speed for at least another year.  When we go to internet-based
NovaNet, we will also be able to do Distance Learning with students on their
home computers or possibly on District laptops.

 

                NovaNet's programs easily raise students' reading and math
levels.  If a student studies on a regular basis, I haven't seen anyone
unable to reach the levels they need to pass the GED.  My students are all
voluntary attendees, and I do a short Time and Motivation Management session
(1.5 hrs) before they can begin working on NovaNet.  This prepares them to
manage their time and to ask me for help when they need it.  I am also able
to give credits in Adult Education for basic skills work.  I offer this work
as a first choice of "Elective" if the student hasn't passed their HS Exit
Exams.  They usually are glad to take the course when I tell them "It will
make your schoolwork much easier for you."  When I ask follow-up questions,
they most often say, "Oh, yes, it did make my work easier-I understand now."
Also " I feel like I really learned something this time" is the comment that
has convinced our frequently changing new administrators that NN is very
worthwhile.
