[LearningDisabilities 1720] Re: Research Validated ReadingInstruction- Hooked on Phonics?Andres and Robin, As a certified Orton-Gillingham tutor and tutor-trainer I have had 18 years of experience tutoring children and adults in reading using the O-G approach. There is no doubt in my mind that decoding skills lead to better fluency and comprehension. How can one read fluently and comprehend the meaning of text without accurate phonological processing? For some it comes naturally. For those with dyslexia, direct and explicit instruction is needed (IDA) in all aspects of teaching reading with phonological processing heading the list. Thank you, Robin, for the references siting the research. That is such a valuable resource. Andres, the research is there. You better shave your head!

There ain't one single piece of scientific evidence that says that phonics helps dyslexics. In fact scientific research suggests otherwise. If anyone can show me one single research article published in a respected journal that validates the use of phonics to teach dyslexics, I will shave my head.

You can help your students improve their reading skills as they are able to make sense of the English language. You can teach by using simple sound spellings for any words your students need to be able to read. That way they learn to decode the various vowel and consonant sounds in our language. My sped students enjoy learning how to find the sound spelling, as well as how to get from the sound spelling to the written spelling. Applied phonics.
