We use a student learning assessment that we created ourselves along with a learning styles assessment that was created elsewhere.  Based on the student’s response, we give strategies to help with any learning concerns, including directing them to our Learning Specialist if undiagnosed LD is possible.  (We would NOT recommend using any kind of LD screening without a counselor administering it.)

 

 We have automated our student learning assessment tool and are currently continuing to “tweak” it. The automated webtool is not ready for other colleges to use yet, but you can access all of our assessments and reports in hardcopy via our website:  http://webs.rtc.edu/ii/dsdp.html    Some of our instructors prefer to give the assessments on paper rather than on the computer.  Either one works just fine.

I would like to implement such an orientation in my "work ready" training program. Does anyone have one and be willing to discuss your procedures? Thank you for taking the time to post a message.  I am so happy to know that the discussion has been helpful to you.

 

You brought up an excellent point, Rosalind.  I agree with you that most adult learners with LD will not volunteer that information and are not aware that they can get the extra help they need.  So many are uninformed of their legal rights.  The reality is that no one has ever had such a conversation with them.  

 

Before we even talk about accommodations we should be looking at the intake process in our adult education and literacy programs.  We should ask whether we are providing necessary information from the initial point of entry or orientation through intake that explains what services are available to students who have diagnosed LD as well as other disabilities. We should make sure they are aware of program options, how to request accommodations that they are qualified for, and know their rights and responsibilities.

 

How many of your programs have such a process that is 'standard operating procedure?'

HELLO EVERYONE :

I AM SOMEWHAT A LURKER ON THIS BOARD. I MUST SAY I REALLY ENJOY THE DISCUSSIONS VERY MUCH AND THEY ARE HELPFUL TO ME. THE TOPIC ON THE BOARD AT THE PRESENT TIME IS VERY DEAR TO ME FOR I HAVE THREE CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES WHOM I AM RAISING. THAT SAID I ALSO AM A ADULT WHO HAS HAS BEEN ENROLLED IN THE VOCATIONAL TRAINING HERE IN MY STATE. I WOULD FIRST LIKE TO POINT OUT TO SOME THAT A PERSON WITH A DISABILITY SHOULD NOT DEMAND AN ACCOMMODATION IN THE TESTING, WE ARE TRYING TO CHANGE THE WAY IN WHICH SOCIETY VIEW INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES, AND YES SOME SEE THEM AS DEMANDING DUE THEIR DISABILITIES FOR WHICH THEY HAVE RIGHT TO LEGALLY.

AND MOST ADULT LEARNERS THAT HAVE LEARNING DISABILITIES WILL NOT VOLUNTEER THIS INFORMATION AND ARE NOT AWARE THAT THEY CAN GET THE EXTRA HELP THEY NEED. I LIVE IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA AND IN SOME COUNTIES OUR CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES ARE NOT ALLOW TO ENROLL IN THE VOCATIONAL PROBLEMS UNLESS THEY CAN PASS THE TABE TEST. WHEN I ENROLLED WE HAD TO PASS THE TABE BEFORE THEY ALLOW US TO GRADUATE OR COMPLETE OUR VOCATIONAL PROGRAM, WHICH MANY OF THE STUDENTS TO DROPOUT. I ASK MY INSTRUCTOR ABOUT THE STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES AND HE TOLD ME THEY COULD GET THE EXTRA HELP , BUT THEY HAD TO BE ONE TELL THE INSTRUCTOR THEY HAD LD OR DISABILITY OR GET THEIR TRANSCRIPTS FROM THEIR LAST SCHOOL IN ORDER TO GET IT. BUT AS STATED EARLIER MOST INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES WON'T TELL ANYONE, BECAUSE OF EMBARASSMENT AND THE INSTRUCTOR ATTITUDE. WHILE I WAS ENROLLED IN IN MY TRAINING, I CHANGE MY PROGRAM BECAUSE OF THE INSTRUCTOR'S ATTITUDE, AND I DO NOT HAVE A DISABILITY I WAS THERE TO FRESHEN UP UP MY SKILLS TO RE-ENTER THE JOB MARKET. SO UNDER THE FEDERAL LAW A PERSON WITH A DISABILITY CAN ASK AND RECEIVE ACCOMMODATIONS AND ASSISTANCE, BUT SOME TIMES GETTING IT IS A BATTLE. I HAVE SEEN IT HAPPEN OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
