Great idea Betsy--if you haven't watched GEnnis' Gift, I recommend you do BEFORE th is event--you may choose to start with it because, as Rochelle noted, it has such lovely stories in it and it so gorgeously done. FAT City is very direct and requires some good discussion. As I have noted here before, I think that FAT City is an excellent illustration of how TEACHERS misunderstand learners and make learning hard for them, not so much about persons with LD and how they confuse things. Ennis' gift is definitely about and by persons with LD of all ages, so the two complement each other-- looking at the persons with LD and then looking at ways in which their different look at the world is often so sadly misconstrued by teachers.
Also, the Lab School of Washington has a whole set of videos about its approach to teaching people with LD and are excellent. I think the website is labschool.org It is a school only for persons with LD from pre-school through adult.

Robin and Katrina, I have the DVD “Beyond F.A.T.
City. It is a
discussion with some of the participants of the “F.A.T. City,
How Difficult Can This Be”, and they talk about the history of the original
video, trends and issues in the field of learning disabilities and the
challenges ahead for parents and professionals in the field. I am
planning a collaborative effort this coming school year with our local Literacy
Council, the Charter Schools and the Public Library to show both of those and
possibly “Ennis’ Gift” to the community followed up by
workshops and/or discussion on LD for those interested. It will be
interesting to see the response.

Hear , hear Katrina-- I agree-- EVERY teacher should watch
that video several times. Every time I see it I am astounded at how
painful learning can be when the learner is so misunderstood. I haven't
seen the sequel to that-- has anyone on the list? Is it good, too?
Another that offers not only the stories--many told by adults--but some real
solutions and is gorgeously done is Ennis' Gift, from the Ennis Cosby
foundation. A lovely. lovely video. Robin Lovrien Schwarz

Hello Leif,
I would recommend a video titled How
Difficult Can This Be? The F.A.T.
City Workshop
by Rick Lavoie. It is excellent in sensitizing and creating awareness of how
students (people) with LD experience challenges in their daily lives, as
well as, strategies for working with these students. It also comes
with a practical discussion guide. You can find more information and
resources at Ricklavoie.com.
This would be an outstanding tool to start the year with.
