Pogson
4) Learning in Adulthood: A Comprehensive Guide - Sharan B. Merriam,
Rosemary S. Cafferella, and Lisa M. Baumgartner d)
5) An Update on Adult Development Theory: New Ways of Thinking About the
Life Course, - M. Carolyn Clark and Rosemary S. Caffarella, Editors
6) Becoming adult learners: Principals and practices for effective
development. Drago-Severson,
7) Reading the world of work. Gallo, M.L.
8) Changing work, changing workers. Hull, G.

Vol 37,Issue 37
My name is Mary Slavik. I used to be director of the literacy council in
Lehigh Acres FL. I am teaching my second Adult Basic Education student.
Both grew into adulthood without being able to read.
The first gentleman was African American. I used the Bible a lot because
he
admired the Bible. It took about one year for him to learn to read.
With the second (current) student is from Haiti. Because he was
abandoned
at birth and raised by a grandmother, he never learned to read; but he
spoke in three languages, including English. I have been using Laubach
series, and it helps quite a lot. We have gone through the 4 basic
books
in reading, and now we're on the Challenger, which is also part of
Laubach.
I throw in some lessons I bring up from the internet, library, any other
source I find that he may find interesting. But Laubach series has
worked
well. We are now meeting about 4 times a week, which helps enormously.
I hope this helps you.
Mary Slavik
