Students with learning disabilities may benefit from a new digital math textbook that reads problems aloud while highlighting the words on a screen, per the findings of the first year of a small two-year study. "All the students did improve in their algebra and pre-algebra skills," said University of Louisville assistant professor Debra K. Bauder. Education Week (10/22)
The SMART project is a research study using digital math textbook content constructed using MathML with eight grade students with learning disabilities studying algebra. The first year of the study has already gleaned some important results, and the education community is showing keen interest in these concepts. Here's an abstract of the study:

I think this underscores the level of interest among educators for accessible math solutions. Hopefully other publishers and instructional software vendors will take note...
