Sheri,
This is why I am advocating at our local campus for a tutor-to-mentor program. We are only allowed to be tutors as long as we are students of the college, which for most of us is only for two years. Instead, I am advocating to the powers-that-be that those of us who tutor for the GED remain a tutor/mentor for those of our students who begin to attend the college after obtaining their GED. The support services do not reside on our campus, as we are out in the middle of nowhere, and there is no one physically present to support these students in this transition. Having a tutor they know and trust, who has seen them through the GED, seems a perfect solution to me because 1) the relationship is already established, and 2) the tutor knows the campus, the courses, the instructors, etc. from experience with them.
I am also trying to work out a transition program from the local high school to the college, especially for students with LDs, for the same reason.
In this way we can be advocates as well as tutors and mentors...

...Can this felon go on to higher education/training? YES. But that's something he's probably never considered. The bummer for our center has been: when accommodated GED-testers do transition into college, even with the help of SSS at the post-secondary level, they "start all over again" and have to self-advocate, explain their needs to people who aren't willing to provide accommodations. Frustrating.
