Jeanette:
I once wrote to Doug Fields at the NICHD, who is a leading researcher in
white matter. Here is a cut and paste from his response to my questions
about connectivity and what he referred to as circuits. I attached his
incredible list of references. Look at the dyslexia section.

Thank you for your letter and interest in our research and the
Sci. Am. article on white matter. The July issue of Trends in
Neurosciences will have a scientific review article that I wrote on
white matter in neurological disorders and cognitive function that
includes many references on dyslexia. I attach the supplemental table
that will accompany that review where you will find many references on
reading disorders and other psychiatric and cognitive processes
associated with white matter differences.

In answer to your question, by circuits I mean connections
between different cortical regions where different aspects of decoding
visual information necessary for reading and language are carried out.
Timing is important because the information must pass from one center to
another to carryout the complex functions required for reading. Of
course, developmental effects on neurons are also important. My recent
research is simply indicating a new dimension for research into myelin
involvement in cognitive function.

If you cannot get the Trends in Neurosciences article after
it comes out, let me know. I can't release it until after it is
published, however.

Best regards,
Doug Fields
