Dear Herbert,

In Virginia I have worked with workplace educators for more
nearly 15 years. In 1990 the VDOE, Office of Adult
Education contractd to prepare what were termed Employee
Development DIrectors. I developed that training, delivered
it and supported those individuals in their work. In 1996,
through funds from VDOE the Workforce Improvement Network
was formed. The Network continues to provide support to
workplace educators throughout Virginia in a variety of
ways. Further, the Workforce Development Campus at James
Madison University, provides online and blended training for
workplace educators. The WDC can be reached by going to the
VAWIN website http://vawin.jmu.edu Currently, these WDC
courses are noncredit, but credit can be earned through the
Adult Education/Human Resource Development Program in the
College of Education at JMU. Most Adult Education and Human
Resource Development programs are non-accredited by any
professional organization as of yet. However, our
University and our AHRD program is accredited through SACS.
An effort is currently underway to bring accreditation to
Human Resource Development programs which will most
certainly include workplace educator preparation programs.

People can pursue advanced study through doctoral programs
in Adult Education, Adult Learning and Leadership, Human
Resource Development at a variety of institutions including
Penn State, the University of Georgia, Columbia and the
University of Minnesota to name a few. Emphasis in
workplace learning for basic skills is relatively new to
doctoral study. At JMU in our Masters program we partner
with the Workforce Development Campus to provide workplace
learning as a concentration.

I do hope this helps. The preparation of workplace
educators is something I have dedicated much of my
professional energies toward. Please let me know if I can
be of additional assistance.
