National Dissemination Center for Career and Technical Education The Ohio State University Columbus, Ohio 43210-1090 For Immediate Release Hans Meeder, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Office of Vocational and Adult Education, U.S. Department of Education, will moderate a panel discussion on "What Makes a Community College Responsive to its Labor Market?" during a live Webcast on Thursday, December 16, at 3 p.m. EST. Deputy Assistant Secretary Meeder is responsible for policy, research, and planning in the administration of the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act of 1998 and the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act of 1998. He is also director of the department-wide high school initiative, Preparing America's Future. Panel members joining Meeder for the roundtable discussion will be: Tony Zeiss, President, Central Piedmont Community College, North Carolina; Robert Templin, President, Northern Virginia Community College, Virginia; Charlene Nunley, President, Montgomery College, Maryland; and Patricia Keir, Chancellor, Eastern Iowa Community College, Iowa. Zeiss became the third president of Central Piedmont College in North Carolina in 1992. During his tenure, the college has grown from one campus to six and has become recognized as a national leader in workforce development. He has authored or coauthored several books on economic development, adult literacy, and national workforce development. Zeiss holds a doctorate in community college administration, a master's degree in speech (radio and television), and a bachelor's degree in speech education. Templin serves as the fourth president of Northern Virginia Community College, Virginia's largest institution of higher education, and the nation's second-largest community college. Over the past 15 years, Templin's work in workforce training, education, and economic development has been featured in such publications as The Washington Post, USA Today, and Fortune. He is the author of Virginia's comprehensive workforce development plan and was instrumental in the creation of the "Blueprint for Technology-Based Economic Growth in Virginia," a strategic plan that outlines the steps Virginia should take to guide the state's emergence as a leading technology state. Nunley became the sixth chief executive officer of Montgomery College in 1999. Previously, she served as executive vice president and chief administrative officer. Her distinguished career in educational administration includes academic administration, planning, finance, budgeting, and resource development. Nunley has served as professor of business administration and economics, and as vice president of planning and advancement, where she directed the college's first multi-million-dollar capital campaign and secured matching funds from Montgomery County. Her professional educational preparation includes a doctorate from George Washington University in educational policy studies, a master's degree in higher education, and a bachelor's degree from The Pennsylvania State University Psychology Honors Program. Keir has been chancellor of Eastern Iowa Community College District since July 2004, after serving 5 years as president at San Diego Miramar College. Prior to her tenure there, she was executive vice president and provost at Lansing Community College in Michigan, and held administrative posts at College of DuPage in Illinois. Keir served as a member of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Task Force on Homeland Security, served on the AACC Commission on Economic and Workforce Development, and is completing her term as president of the American Council on Education (ACE) Fellows Program Council of Fellows. She also serves on the boards of Community Colleges for International Development (CCID) and the Partnership for Environmental Technology Education (PETE). Keir places great emphasis on community involvement, aggressively seeking out industry, community, political, and educational leaders, and forming strong alliances and new partnerships to serve community needs and improve learning experiences for students. She earned her doctorate in adult and continuing education from Northern Illinois University, master's degrees from Wayne State University and Wesleyan University, and a bachelor's degree from Cornell University.
