Hello All,

In response to ESTHER SUSANA PRINS' comment, I would
have to say that "yes" race does have an
effect-sometimes an ill one-on educational, social,
and economic advancement. Sad, but true. In Thomas
Shapiro's The Hidden Cost of Being African American,
he maintains that, "Similar achievements by people of
similar abilities do not yield comparable results"
(p.9). Additionally, Shapiro discusses the economic
disparity that race perpetuates between blacks and
whites. Unfortunately, we live in a society that sees
color all too often and fails to see beyond the color
to the ability. When we learn to view the content of
character and the ability to get the job done over a
person's skin color, we will have made some true
progress in the United States.

And while I do realize that all rehabilitation
programs are not effective for all individuals that
participate in them, I would ask just how much of the
prison system's rehabilitation efforts are genuinely
aimed at sending productive citizens back into our
society? Prison is big business and it pays to have
repeat offenders. This may be slightly off topic, but
it does have an effect on the ability to earn wages
once released.
