To the Group:

I recommend two films: There is a television documentary from a television station in Salt Lake City called "Streetlife: The Invisible Family." (mostly white families are interviewed) I also recommend the film "Almost Home." (transitional housing and education isses - mostly black and hispanic in NYC). For further information on this issue I also recommend you contact my professor at UNC Charlotte, Maria Yon, (mgyon at email.uncc.edu) who teaches a class on teaching homeless children for doctoral students.

"I meant," said Ipslore bitterly, "what is there in this world
that truly makes living worthwhile?"
Death thought about it.
"Cats," he said eventually. "Cats are nice."

Subject: [PovertyRaceWomen 161] Video to Sensitive Educators,SLPs to Poverty Issues

I am a speech-language pathologist (SLP) and I will be doing a
presentation to my colleagues working in school settings on literacy in
low income homes and implications for SLPs. I am looking to make this
1/2 day session as interactive as possible and am seeking some help for
a video or a clip from a movie which would help to sensitize the
audience to some of the issues of those children that come from
low-income homes. Unfortunately, most of what I have some across relates
to African Americans or immigrant minority groups. Is anyone aware of
something that might meet my needs (30 minutes or less). I am also
looking for ideas for activities that could be done with the group.
Thanks in advance!
Rhonda Rubin
