Hello,
This is Susan Browne. I've neglected to introduce myself but I've been on the list for about a semester. I teach in the reading dept. at Rowan Univ. in Glassboro, NJ.
This sounds like a wonderful conference. If I could present at the conference, I would want to present on community-based literacy programs and what can be learned from examining litercy in non-school contexts. A colleague and I have been running an after school literacy program in Philadelphia for four years. This has been an area of interest for me for quite some time and it sounds like it fits with the conference focus.
Susan

This June, Atlanta will be hosting the U.S. Social Forum (USSF). Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend, but I wonder if anyone on this list is planning on going? The USSF gathers social and economic justice organizers, environmentalists, peace and justice activists, community-based organizations, indigenous nations, unions and students to confront issues such as: race, local/global economics, and movement building. For more information, you can go to:
http://www.ussf2007.org/
Some examples of accepted proposals for this conference are:
Breaking the Shackles of Economic Slavery
Listening as a Tool in Ending Racism and Other Oppressions
The Role of White People in Ending Racism
The Higher Education Crisis: From Resistance to Democratization
Here are my questions for possible discussion:
1. If you could present at the conference, what literacy related topic would you want to share with conference participants?
2. If this conference had sessions that related to the focus of this list (poverty, race, women and literacy), what are some examples of session titles that you would expect to see?
