That's a good question. There are connections to race and poverty. The
program initially began to address "under achieving" children in need of
support to meet testing benchmarks. However, as we evolved into what seems
more like and extended family, the focus shifted to literacy empowerment
defined in less normative ways and literacy enrichment as defined by the
children's desires.
