Colleagues--

There is a fabulous article in today's NYTimes--front page--about a
special program that helps minority youth apply to college. I
understand it's not quite up our alley, but it could be.

What interested me so much was the story of the application process,
and how through skillful coaching a student could become "college
material" on an application.

This summer I have living in my home a soon to be college senior, and
she is planning to be a doctor, and so she is spending large chunks of
her time taking practice MCAT tests (Medical College Admission Tests).
Her scores are going up--she is getting smarter about test taking
skills.

Lessons:

1) Students who are test averse may be cutting off life chances.

2) Students coming from educationally impoverished backgrounds simply
do not get the necessary exposure to the experiences that build rich
educational foundations
