Less than a week left to select your top choice (only one please) for a possible name for our list! Until Feb. 11th, you can post your selection on list or email it to me off list (dgreenberg at gsu.edu)

Some of you who participated in the discussion, have not yet posted or sent me your votes. I hope to see your votes soon!

As far as an update is concerned, it is the same as 1/29 when I last reported it with ONE exception:
Literacy and Voice is now ahead of Class, Color, Gender, and Literacy as well as
Class, Ethnicity, Gender, and Literacy (all 3 were tied last time).

First place: Diversity and Literacy

Second place: Class, Gender, Race, and Literacy

Third place: Gender, Poverty, Race, and Literacy

Fourth place:
Literacy and Voice

Tied for fifth place:
Class, Color, Gender, and Literacy
Class, Ethnicity, Gender, and Literacy

Tied for sixth place:
Gender, Income, Race and Literacy
Poverty, Race, Women, and Literacy (our current name)

For those of you new to the list, or for those of you who want a reminder, here are some of the points that were made during our discussion period:

"Words like class, color, are for me a lot less potent and/or motivating than poverty and race."

"I like "color" a lot better than "race" because in this country it is color of the skin, and "race" is difficult. "Diversity" is usually a euphemism for "race" which actually is a stand-in for color"

"I like the word "ethnicity" because it covers color, race, and anything in-between."

"Poverty, Gender and Race have a direct impact on literacy and they should be addressed and explored, and are
the issues that are explored the most in this group."

"The advantage of the name "Diversity and Literacy" is that it allows for the full range of topics that concern our community and the intersection of those topics"

"I like the title of Diversity & Literacy. Diversity covers not only class, color, gender, ethnicity, income, race, poverty but also culture, politics, religion, language, etc. I like the fact that the term diversity covers such a wide spectrum of topics and will allow you more flexibility to explore how they all interact with Literacy."

"Diversity and Literacy is the best name for this list. It is simple and gets right to the point."

"It is true, that sometimes the word "diversity" winds up meaning only one thing in some places, but not here. I agree with those who support the idea that diversity should mean ALL: race, gender, ethnicity, ability, of all brands, flavors, varieties, colors, etc. It would be good for us to support that through our list, and continue talking about all varieties of people,
backgrounds, and experiences."
