Thank you so much Dahlia, Kate, Molly and everyone else who offered suggestions so far. Regretfully, I don't often have the opportunity to contribute on this list either due to the fact I am busy running a literacy program on a staff of one and a half staff members. However, I enjoy reading the posts. I look forward to trying some of the suggestions in my program.

Even though I can't pay for "peer coaches", I can certainly try and recruit some volunteers for this project. I think some of my students would enjoy helping others.

Thanks,
Shannie

Hi Shannie:

I'm not big on emailing the entire group, but I do recall a discussion some time ago on one of these listservs in which someone noted that they use volunteers from the actual program to help bring other students in. I.e., they get students who are successful and "reward" them by paying them to go out and get more students in...perhaps there is a way to have your students work with intake and retention to help you encourage these women. It's one thing to see a successful program director or coordinator and have them tell you you can do it, another thing entirely to see someone just like you who maybe even had greater challenges, and see they did it. And even better, to have that person who really understands you to walk you through the potentially scary parts.

I'm also reminded that along with fear of failure, many women have a fear of success, and women of color may face greater barriers in becoming successful.

Very best, Dahlia
