Jackie,
I had sent the message below on 10/24 - it must not have made it. NP =)
A Brief Summary of Adult and Basic Literacy Education in Billings, MT:
Those of us at the Adult Education Center in Billings, MT, actually are employed by our local school district. We are also members of BEA/MEA/NEA - a definite bargaining unit. Has it helped? Yes, we are unique adult educators because we work fulltime and receive decent salaries and benefits. We are active in our local bargaining unit (Billings Education Association) and respected by our peers within the school district. Many of us have served on school district curriculum committees; this has been a definite benefit for both K-12 teachers and our program. You may preview our contract at http://www.billings.k12.mt.us/contracts/bea.pdf. This year our unit will be working on a new contract. Hopefully, there will be a positive result. Three years ago we went on strike - a very stressful situtation for all involved.

Subject: [ProfessionalDevelopment] Collective bargaining?
Hello everyone,
I realized that there weren't many responses posted to the list regarding the
recent thread on collective bargaining (perhaps b/c it was right around the
time NIFL switched servers?) and I've had an inquiry since then regarding this
topic. At any rate, I thought I'd check in with the list -- did anyone have
anything more to say about collective bargaining in adult education?
What are some examples of local areas, regions, or states where teachers are
organized and feel they have improved salaries, benefits and working
conditions as a result?
Any advice you have in this area would be helpful to those on the list who may
be interested in organizing.
Thanks...Jackie Taylor
