[ProfessionalDevelopment 675] FW: Career pathways - what does our fieldhave to offer?Taylor, Jackie jataylor at utk.eduTue Dec 12 12:34:13 EST 2006
Hi All: My Internet access was unexpectedly limited last week, and I just wanted to say how much I appreciate all of your recent responses to my inquiry. More in that regard in a bit. In the meantime, the following is posted on behalf of Micki Greer Jaggars, please read on! Best, Jackie Taylor ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ----- Hi Jackie, I decided to share...feel free to post the info 1) What state did you start your career in adult literacy? Tennessee 2) How did you enter the field and into what role? A friend called me and told me there was an immediate opening in the adult education field (GED teacher) and I was hired. 3) How did you move within the field? Consider changes in: -- role: Teacher, Facilitator, Presenter, Peer Trainer (types of classes: GED,ESL,literacy,AE, Families First) -- provider type: Our center began as a small organization providing GED classes; expanded to provide community classes - computer, etc., ESL.; expanded to include family literacy and Even Start, Out of School Youth... -- part-time to full-time or vice-versa: part-time, later: full-time, back to part-time (funding issues) -- promotion -- location (did you need to relocate for the job?)no....but I would relocate if a full-time position was available 4) Did you leave the field, if so, to what position, and why? I don't want to say that I've left...hopefully future funding will help me return to the GED/AE/literacy classroom. I am presently an independent contractor for professional development and tutor children in math and English in a local after-school program (funded by grants). 5) If you left the field, did you return and if so to what role or position? Note: During my 10-year tenure in adult education, I accepted a high school science position. I taught during the second semester (a teacher had left mid-year). I returned to adult education the next season. 6) To whom does the top pay go in your state or area? not sure 7) What supports or resources, if any, were helpful to you along the way? Action research grants, peer coaching, professional development activities, a supportive supervisor 8) Other thoughts? Although I stumbled upon the profession, I believe it is my calling. I hope to return to the field full-time. ________________________________ From: "Taylor, Jackie" <jataylor at utk.edu> Reply-To: The Adult Literacy Professional Development Discussion List<professionaldevelopment at nifl.gov> To: "The Adult Literacy Professional Development Discussion List"<professionaldevelopment at nifl.gov> Subject: [ProfessionalDevelopment 661] Career pathways - what does our fieldhave to offer?
