I saw it too, and was inspired and reminded that the seeds that are planted in the classroom can grow...even through all of the processes (challenges). The teacher's passion and commitment to wanting to positively impact her students, despite a lack of resources and support were reflective of my own as a longtime instructor and that of some other teachers I have had the opportunity to meet in my path of practice.

The dire circumstances with which the students were faced are indeed very similar to many ABE students' situation in urban and (rural) program settings. The reality is that even the best of teachers in ABE programs can feel and be overwhelmed and unsupported in trying to address affective and instructional issues. Indeed, a balance is often quite difficult resulting in inefficiency and an inability to be the change makers to which we are called.

As such, professional development (traditional and reform models) efforts that enable and empower teachers in this regard becomes even more crucial.
