Hello everyone,

In response to Cece's letter I think everyone deserves second chances or even more. As a GED Adult Instructor I feel it is of the utmost importance adult learners in class know that just because they do not have a high school diploma does not mean they are inferior or stupid. Just because someone may have a Master's Degree does not mean they are any smarter ot better. How a person perceives themselves can be a major part in how they see success. Working with adult learners is like working with your neighbor. The people need to know you really care and will not turn on them even after their same 30th question in 2 minutes. Patience is a virtue that both the adult learner and the instructor could use to help enhance the learning environment. I try to give an office atmosphere to the classroom. I think this helps the learners so as they do not feel they are in high school. It helps give a relaxed atmosphere to the room. Many adult learners have come into the classroom with much added baggage(as I would call it). They have been told over and over by their families, their teachers etc... that success for them will be limited and they are a .loser. This type of mindset needs to be addressed by the instructor. He or she should let the learner know they do have worth and are able to succeed in our world.Caring is the most important thing to remember as the instructor.
