[ProfessionalDevelopment 773] Sustaining the gain

PD List Colleagues:
-- I have a question for you but I don't want it to take away from the
current dialogues. I'm hoping we can bounce various ideas around at
once? --

I've been thinking a lot lately about continuous improvement on various
levels: in our own individual teaching and learning initiatives, in our
organization's, and as a field of adult literacy professional
development. While planning strategically is one key element in moving
our work forward, getting a project launched or 'to scale' doesn't
necessarily mean that it stays there. What do you do to _sustain_ the
gain?

* What factors need to be considered, and from which direction(s)?
* What are key elements in moving beyond implementation of outstanding
ideas?
* How do you capitalize upon what works, imbed and improve that process
in your practice?
* What works for you and your style of instruction, leadership, and/or
project management?
* How do you resolve the difference between what students, teachers, or
staff _really_ learn, with that of your own expectations (or that of
other stakeholders); and how do you adjust?

One more question -- we've all seen PD initiatives come and go, either
for circumstances within or outside of their control. Think about the
ones that were (or are) most successful. What do _you_ think they did
that helped them to succeed _and_ to sustain the gain?

Thanks in advance for sharing your perspectives - I know you are busy
lot!
