Yes, Alison, you are absolutely right-- giving up is not an option-- but finding an alternative solution is. From my way of thinking, there is always an alternative that will have profound benefit; all we have to do as teachers is to help our adult students have confidence in themselves as we work with them to find a good fit.

What a beautiful story Barbara. I think we got more than just phonemic
awareness from it. It's a matter of not giving up on our students no matter
their age or ability. There is no such thing as not being able to learn; we just
have to learn differently.
