Hello Katrina,
Actually, it's interesting that you bring this issue up. I'd like to
share with you an opportunity that models the point you raise.

AALPD has been exploring creative ways to extend learning experiences
beyond the single-session, while at the same time providing
opportunities for those to participate who were not originally able to
attend.

AALPD will be hosting a guest discussion on the Adult Literacy
Professional Development List beginning the week of May 14 to follow up
to the AALPD PreConference at COABE titled "Exploring the Potential for
Online Professional Development." This will be an opportunity for those
who attended to go into greater depth, as well as for those who were
unable to attend to join in discussion.

Our guest panelists from the PreConference have graciously agreed to
join the PD List for the follow up activity. We will also be inviting
additional guests to participate who were unable to join the
PreConference panel for some of the logistical reasons you raise. We
are exploring several technologies to further enhance the online
discussion that we will expand upon later.

In the meantime, the PreConference agenda is now online, and we will be
linking all PreConference materials to it as a way to both archive the
day and provide resources for the online discussion:

http://www.aalpd.org/training/2007coabepreconference_agenda.html
(Keep checking back - we will continue to add materials as they become
available.)

I invite you and others on the list who may be interested in online
professional development to think about:

* What you would like to come away with from this discussion?
* Who you would like us to invite as guests for the online discussion?

As to the NIFL Discussion List session, we can certainly explore the
possibilities for next year. That would be A LOT of fun!

Thanks for your thoughts, Jackie

You know, I don't know if anyone has ever considered this, but what
would be really cool is to coordinate something like this with a live
chat either at the same time or at a later time - where you could reach
people that use the NIFL lists but can't attend the conference. Think
about the world that would open up if we made full use of the
technologies available to connect us to one another.

Just a though.

Regards,
Katrina Hinson

Dear Colleagues,

I invite you to join Daphne Greenberg (Poverty, Race, Women and
Literacy
List Moderator), Marie Cora (Assessment List Moderator), and I for an
interactive double-session workshop:

"Using the National Institute for Literacy's Discussion Lists as
Professional Development"

Tuesday, March 27

Salon 3

1:45 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

4:15 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Last year, we led a single-session at COABE about national discussion
lists. What we learned from that session is that participants wanted
to
know:

* How can I help my teachers use discussion lists for
professional
development?
* How can I get exposure and interaction via national listservs
like I do with my state listserv?
* How might we develop a PD management system that includes using
national discussion lists as teacher PD?
* How might one measure time-on-task for participation in online
discussions?
* What other ways can teachers use NIFL lists for PD? (archives,
search engine for research, etc.)
* How might teachers show evidence as to what they learned from
the discussion?
* What do others do in managing the volumes of email?

We've taken these questions to heart, so we've prepared some materials
that we hope you find useful.

Computer Lab Double Session

Part I will teach you how to most effectively interface with the
technology so that you learn about and feel more comfortable with
using
all of the features available to you.

Part II focuses on how you can use the Lists as professional
development. We will share tools and strategies specifically for NIFL
Lists that can help you develop and carry out your own PD plan - for
yourself, or for staff.

It would be great to connect in-person, so please join us to explore
these issues or stop by and say hi!

- Jackie Taylor
