Jackie,

One of the gifts my former supervisor gave me was a nice keep-sake box with a latch, and in it was 10 things she appreciated about me. (The ten represented our 10 years together since the program's inception). That was about 6 or 7 years ago. I still look at it and get a sense of affirmation.

Additionally, gift cards especially those that can be used anywhere, like VISA are usually good, mini appreciation luncheons, breakfast or dinners is also a good forum for appreciation and celebrations. In addition to those kinds of things, I have also given engraved gifts.

Teachers love to feel appreciated, so any gift that reflects your valuing the person and his or her service would be very special.
