Hi everyone,

My name is Destiny Myers and I'm the Project Manager for Pennsylvania's
ABLE-TIU 11 Distance Learning Project. We are funded by the Pennsylvania
Department of Education, Bureau of ABLE and provide distance instruction for
adult learners as well as professional development for the adult education
field. We have been offering online professional development for several
years. Besides the convenience factor for the participant, we have found
that practitioners completing online professional development have a better
understanding of their distance learners' experiences. It also gives us the
opportunity to "model" good distance teaching strategies.

We have used various methods of distance learning (completely online,
face-to-face and then online follow-up or online courses with face-to-face
follow-up), depending on the topic. We are currently developing two areas
for our online PD. The first being more use of the video within our online
courses. Our adult learners' distance instruction currently includes videos
because we believe that this can help further the learners' understanding.
We'd like to do the same for our practitioners. With the software and
technology that is now available, we have found it a lot easier than we
thought to create videos to include in online professional development
offerings. We also have begun to use webinars (web conferences) with
participants to allow a synchronous learning to compliment their
asynchronous learning experience. The Bureau of ABLE has been using these
webinars for a couple years now. Many practitioners have said that they
liked using this new technology and feel more "techie" after participating.
It's been exciting to see how readily the field has been to embrace the use
of technology.

I'm looking forward to learning more and hearing about others' experiences
with online PD.

Destiny

Subject: [ProfessionalDevelopment 1045] What's happening in online PD?

Hello again, All,

I hope our discussions of creativity and innovation in the classroom
continues - creative ideas from the classroom and 'training room' (online or
face-to-face) can translate both ways.

I'd also like to see our sharing of what's happening in online PD continue.
Thanks to Leecy, George, Sharyn, and Denise, we've learned of examples from
Colorado, Illinois, Nevada, and Texas.

But what about other states? What's happening in Pennsylvania, Tennessee,
California, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri, and Virginia? What about other
organizations that offer online PD?

1) Include some considerations, such as:

* Provider:

* Website:

* Online PD topic(s):

* Open to the public?

* Cost?

* Are CEUs or other credits available? (if so, what type)

* What institution issues the CEUs?

* When offered?

* Unique options or features?

* Anything else you'd like to add?

Please give us a rich description from your perspective, or just send us the
basic information listed above.

2) Or your perspective may be from a slice of what your program, state, or
organization offers. Tell us about the online PD you designed or facilitate.
I look forward to hearing about these exciting aspects of your work!

Thanks! Jackie Taylor
