Good morning!

I was asked to introduce myself to the list. My name is Kim Bellerive. I
am the Assistant Director of the Greater Homewood Adult Literacy and
ESOL Program in Baltimore, Maryland. I began my work here as an
Americorps VISTA in August 2003 after a 4 year career as an elementary
school teacher. In the course of the past 9 years, I have worked with
individuals from the ages of 5 to 72.

* I teach a basic reading skills class two days a week and I
tutor a gentleman who is working towards earning his high school
diploma.

* I am the ABE (Adult Basic Education) Instructional Specialist
for a staff of 5 paid instructors and 70 volunteer tutors. This role is
my main reason for subscribing. I am responsible for planning
professional development for all ABE teachers and tutors.

* I try to avail myself of every opportunity to learn more about
how adults learn and how to meet the needs of adult learners. My single
biggest challenge at the moment is practical tips for working with
teachers/tutors to get them invested in professional development and not
in a place of seeing it as one more thing they have to do. I would
welcome any suggestions on how to foster the kind of climate where
people want to learn more and don't view professional development as a
chore.

Regards,

Kim
