If you haven't checked it out yet, one area in iTunes U that might be of
interest to NIFL Tech List subscribers is from the University of South
Florida's College of Education. The Lit2Go section contains a large
number of audio books/stories that can be downloaded. Students could
listen to the stories/books at the computer or on iPods. The Tech Ease
Classroom Help section contains both PDF tutorials and video Podcasts
showing how to use various Mac and PC software applications to create
your own Podcasts, movies, etc. The Professional Development section has
video Podcasts about teaching ESOL, math and technology infused
learning. And finally, ideas from some of the video Podcasts found in
the Technology in K-12 Lesson Plans section could be adapted for lessons
in an adult ed setting.

In addition to iTunes U the regular Podcast directory from iTunes also
offers many free audio and video Podcasts that might be useful for adult
ed instructors. Free is the key word here since money can be tight in
adult ed programs. All Podcasts found on iTunes are downloadable to Macs
or PCs.

1. Audio Podcasts posted of a little boy reading bedtime stories
(BigStoryTime.com) are wonderful examples of his emerging fluency and
the joy found in reading to parents. These Podcasts could be downloaded
and shared in a Family Literacy program.

2. The Princeton Vocabulary Review and Grammar Girls Podcasts could be
used to liven up the presentation of grammar in a GED program.

3. Video Podcasts downloaded from National Geographic (Video Shorts and
Wild Chronicles) could be use to build background and provide a basis
for discussion in adult ed classes. Topics range from tornadoes to
floods to extreme healing to penguin parenting.

4. There are many more free, educational Podcasts to be found on iTunes.
Search the Podcast directory of the iTunes Store within the Featured
Providers area for Podcasts created by PBS, NASA, NPR, etc. Search the
Categories area under Education, Kids & Family, News & Politics, etc.

And, yes, I think it would be great to post the short adult ed classroom
videos either to Beyond Campus or some other section of iTunes to make
them readily available. The main iTunes Podcast directory (not part of
iTunes U) already has some very nice Professional Development resources:
Ideas for Teaching Reading and Writing from the International Reading
Association, Meet the Experts (Reading Rockets), the Apple Quick Tip of
the Week (to learn to use your Mac), etc. But I haven't found anything
yet that is specifically designed to support adult ed programs.
