I'm not asking that any of us hedge our statements as you indicate in your
message. I was indicating a sense, from your tone, from the use of "the"
(as in the solution is...) that in a discussion to proffer only the one
option leaves little room for others to engage.

Janet,
We are adults, equals, discussing a subject and putting forth our views. I
do not think it is necessary to always say "in my opinion, although I may be
wrong". It is assumed that others have the right to disagree and present a
different view. The situation in the classroom is different The teacher
speaks from a position of authority. That authority is easily abused.
