The Center for Literacy Studies, located within the College of Education, <br>
Health and Human Sciences at the University of Tennessee – Knoxville, is <br>
seeking an onsite Director to begin Spring, 2008. The University of <br>
Tennessee – Knoxville, the flagship institution of the UT system, welcomes <br>

The mission of the Center for Literacy Studies is to support and advance <br>
literacy education across the lifespan. The Center conducts research, <br>
professional development, program evaluation and other work within family, <br>
community, and workplace literacy contexts. <br>
<br>

<br>
The Director oversees the work of the Center, raises funds through grants <br>
and contracts, writes grant proposals and develops budgets, approves <br>
expenditures of funds, and negotiates subcontracts. The Director also hires <br>
and discharges personnel, acts as principal investigator for grants, <br>
provides direct project oversight for some grants, and oversees a staff of <br>
thirty to assure project work is conducted in accordance with contractual <br>
agreements with outside funders. Working collaboratively with the Center’s <br>
Senior Management Team, the Director develops strategic plans, markets the <br>
Center, and integrates work with the College of Education, Health and Human <br>
Sciences. The Director oversees a budget that is in excess of $3 million <br>
annually. Currently, major funders include the National Institute for <br>
Literacy, the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development, the <br>
Tennessee Department of Education, and the National Science Foundation. <br>

Required Qualifications. A Master’s degree with a solid record of <br>
management experience, plus experience in the field of education and/or <br>
adult literacy is required. Demonstrated success in developing funding and <br>
evidence of strong administrative, interpersonal and communication skills <br>
are also required. <br>

<br>
Desired Qualifications. A Doctorate, with a working knowledge of <br>
professional development, technology, evaluation, education research and <br>
curriculum development is preferred. Experience working in a University <br>
setting is desired. Experience in fiscal management, including grants, <br>
contracts and fee for service is desired, along with the ability to work <br>
efficiently and effectively within a collaborative setting. <br>
