[SpecialTopics 1423] My experience being mentored

Hi all….There’s a lot that I agree with in Jeniffer Herrera-Andujar’s
posting, but in particular it was her recognition that adult learner
leadership happens when students are given the opportunity to develop
capacity and self-confidence that has moved me to reflect on my own
experience with being mentored and being a mentor.

An important mentor in my growth as both a student and teacher has been my
former professor, Maricel Santos at SF State. Near the end of my studies in
the MATESOL Program, Maricel and I collaborated together in doing research
and creating and piloting lessons in the Community ESL class that I was
teaching at the time. The key attributes that made Maricel an ideal mentor
teacher for me were the trust and respect I felt that she had in my
experience and skills, and they way she supported me in using them to
improve our collaborative work. Her example has inspired me to do the same
with my teacher assistants who are developing their skills in my classroom –
recognizing and valuing the unique skills and experiences they have and
supporting them in contributing those skills as partners....Jeff McClelland
