I'm not actually researching social networking per se, but rather the
broader scope of online training/distance education, particularly as it
impacts the Canadian literacy field. Our project is a national one and is
called Getting Online. You can find more information at
www.nald.ca/gettingonline.

One of the things we are researching is the type of technology that is being
used both by the literacy field and also by similar fields (not-for-profits,
small organizations, etc.). Social networking is just one of the "add-on"
type features that we have seen, along with podcasts, wikis and so forth. I
haven't seen a lot of examples of it, but then I haven't been specifically
looking for it at this point. I think it is being used, when it is being
used, by educational institutions such as universities and colleges, and
those aren't the focus of our research. But I have definitely seen a lot of
references to social networking through various lists and online articles
that I come across; it is certainly a growing area of interest, particularly
in terms of moving from the realm of "fun sites" to useful sites that link
in with work, education, etc.

Thanks Vicki,

At the end of your message you mention your research. What type of research
work are you doing related to the use of social networking sites/tech?

Best,

Mariann
