Larry I am doing a small piece of research in the UK on assessment in adult business English EAL. UNfortunatley most of the test available here are summative which, in my opinion, have little benefit for the learner; so am looking for any formative/diagnostic assessment instruments that would, ideally, be computerised and that give immediate feedback to the learner - and not just right or wrong, but something a little more informative. A tall order - and I have a feeling that I am pre-judging the outcome of my research. This is what I would like my students to have as a tool, but I haven't proved it yet! Oh, and one last requirement - it needs to test literacy development, not just proficiency in language skills. For this reason, I am leaning towards a test based on vocabulary size which according to a lot of the literature is as good an indicator of language level as anything else. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
