<DIV><FONT face=Arial>Hello Michele,</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial>I am surprised at your responses. I think there is plenty
of professional wisdom (and some research) documented in the technology topic
area of the ALE Wiki, some of which addresses the benefits and
challenges. Have you looked at some of the studies listed on this
page:</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial></FONT> </DIV>

<DIV><FONT face=Arial></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial>for example: Zarcadoolas, et.al, Dillon-Marable, the two
Ginsberg pieces, and the Imel ERIC digest ?</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial>I suggest you read through the archived discussions of
this discussion list using the NIFL search engine, and searching for
"integrating" and "technology" .You may find challenges and opportunities raised
by those working in the field.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial>I wonder if the problem is that you expect adult literacy
education to have the more extensive research bibliography that you might find
in K-12 and higher education. Unfortunately, adult literacy education ,
historically, has only had a pittance for research, and sorry to say, funding
for the only research institute devoted to adult literacy was last year
eliminated from the U.S. Department of Education budget. Also, several years
ago, the great work on adult literacy education that used to be done by
Susan Imel and her colleagues at ERIC was eliminated. </FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial>I suggest you at least start with the ALE Wiki. That will
link you to the (admittedly limited) research our field has on
integrating technology. </FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial>In a few weeks there will be a new NIFL-sponsored study on
distance education, by Heidi Silver-Pacuilla, that will be announced on
this list. Watch for that. It may have some sections that are useful to
you.If you want to see what California adult education teachers see as
opportunities to integrate technology in the classroom, then you'll find
that in the OTAN videos Marian Thacher mentioned. There are other videos, too,
on integrating technology in the classroom, the Captured Wisdom videos for
example, that you'll find linked from the Media Library of Teaching Skills,
htttp:mlots.org</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial>I will be eager to see if you find any new adult education
and technology studies or resources not currently listed on the ALE Wiki, and if
so, I hope you will add them.</FONT></DIV>

you for taking the time to provide this wealth of information; however, it
does on necessarily speak to my interests. I am looking for resources that
outline the current benefits and challenges of technology integration in US
adult literacy programs. As per my assignment, I must address more than one
perspective. The resources herein focus on uses of technology and practices,
but no mention of obstacles/impediments to use of technology. If you have any
leads in this area, please let me know.</FONT></P>

Michelle,<BR>> <BR>> One place to start learning about technology
integration in adult <BR>> literacy is the Adult Literacy Education (ALE)
Wiki's Technology <BR>> topic area:<BR>> <BR>>
http://wiki.literacytent.org/index.php/Technology<BR>> <BR>>
specifically, Integrating Technology in the Classroom:<BR>> <BR>>
http://wiki.literacytent.org/index.php/ClassroomPractices<BR>> <BR>>
Since the ALE is is a wiki, a free tool for the adult education <BR>>
community of practice interested in professional wisdom and research, <BR>>
please add useful resources and citations that may not be there yet , <BR>>
including, your own research paper, when it is finished.<BR>> <BR>> As
you continue along in your research, you may wish to post more <BR>>
questions to this discussion list, another tool for building and <BR>>
sustaining a community of practice of those interested in adult <BR>>
literacy education and technology.<BR>> <BR>> David J. Rosen<BR>>
