Dear Colleagues, Elsa Auerbach and Nina Wallerstein have updated and
rewritten their groundbreaking book ESL for Action. It's now available from
Grassroots Press at www.literacyservices.com. There is also a new teacher's
guide that accompanies the book. There are brief descriptions of these
resources below. Please take a look. Jenny Lee Utech, Massachusetts Worker
Education Roundtable.

Problem Posing at Work: English for Action
BY ELSA AUERBACH AND NINA WALLERSTEIN

This student book contains 30 lessons that focus on workplace themes and
issues related to the working lives of immigrants and refugees. Inspired by
the problem-posing approach of Paulo Freire, this book invites learners to
share and analyze their experiences, to acquire the language, skills and
information necessary for greater power over their circumstances, and to
strategize together for changes. Originally published in 1987 as ESL for
Action, this revised edition is updated to incorporate a focus on the
effects of globalization on workers' lives while its scope is expanded to
include information about Canada as well as the U.S. It includes authentic
photos and stories of workers active in their workplaces and communities.
The text is intended for intermediate to advanced ESL students in workplace,
pre-vocational, vocational, community-based, union, and labour education
programs.

Problem-Posing at Work: Popular Educator's Guide
BY NINA WALLERSTEIN AND ELSA AUERBACH

This is a new book which explores Freirian approaches to adult education. It
is for educators interested in critical reflection and social action from
diverse fields: English as a Second Language and literacy, public health,
labor and community organizing, health and safety education, community
psychology and facilitation, high school settings, and teacher education and
other professional programs. This educators guide presents the underlying
rationale for the "problem-posing" teaching approach, strategies and tools
for classrooms and community settings, a case study of a problem-posing
cycle by workplace educator Jenny Utech, an analysis of the role of social
change pedagogy within globalization struggles, and an extensive resource
list. While the book draws on prior work of the authors (including
Wallersteins' Language and Culture in Conflict and Auerbach's Making
Meaning, Making Change), it extends these texts to build on the accumulated
knowledge and experience of educators who have been inspired by Freire's
work over the past several decades.
