Webcast Addresses Projected Acute Career and Technical Education
Leadership Shortage

The National Dissemination Center for Career and Technical Education will
present a live webcast, "Leadership for Career and Technical Education and
Workforce Education" on May 25, 2005, 3:00 to 4:30 PM. (EDT). This
interactive event, and previous webcasts, can be viewed on any computer
with Internet access at: http://www.nccte.org.

Career and technical education (CTE) is facing an impending leadership
crisis. Community colleges and K12 school leaders have been retiring at an
alarming rate - a trend that is expected to continue as "baby boomers" age.
As a consequence, higher numbers of individuals must be prepared to fill
leadership roles. This webcast will highlight the need for CTE leadership
development and will inform viewers about state career and technical
education leadership programs. By using available resources and
implementing innovative strategies, community colleges and secondary school
systems can work to ensure qualified leaders are ready to fill leadership
positions.

The panel for this webcast is: David Dean, Certification and Professional
Development Coordinator, Idaho Division of ProfessionalTechnical Education;
James McKenney, Vice President for Economic Development, American
Association of Community Colleges (AACC), Washington, DC; and Rebecca
Parker, Curriculum and Professional Development Specialist, National
Dissemination Center for Career and Technical Education, The Ohio State
University.

David Dean coordinates certification activities associated with pre-service
and in service education programs. He facilitates statewide efforts to
promote pedagogy and technical upgrading of teaching skills. Prior to his
current position, Dean was assistant coordinator, lecturer, and visiting
scholar of the Professional Instruction Program, The Ohio State University.
He planned and supervised pre-service teacher education courses, conducted
seminars, and conducted research on teacher professional development. Dean
has a doctoral degree in comprehensive vocational education from The Ohio
State University.

James McKenney is a primary point of interface for economic and workforce
development between the American Association of Community Colleges and
public/private organizations, agencies, and trade associations. Also, he
oversees the development of partnerships and collaborative projects between
the United States and international organizations/agencies. McKenney serves
on the boards with the American Youth Policy Forum, SkillsUSA, and the
National Commission on Cooperative Education. McKenney received his
doctoral degree in college student personnel with an emphasis in counseling
from the University of Maryland.

Rebecca Parker coordinates the planning, promotion, facilitation, and
administration of many workforce education dissemination activities on a
nationwide basis. Her background includes teaching early childhood
education at a secondary career center and serving as an adjunct professor
in teacher education and a curriculum specialist at The Ohio State
University. Parker has a bachelor's degree in home economics education (New
name: Family and Consumer Sciences) and a master's degree in comprehensive
vocational technical studies from The Ohio State University.
