FYI ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ National Dissemination Center for Career and Technical Education The Ohio State University Columbus, Ohio 43210-1090 For Immediate Release Webcast Addresses Recruiting, Developing, and Retaining Quality Career Technical/Workforce Education (CTWE) Teachers The National Dissemination Center for Career and Technical Education will present a webcast entitled "Recruiting, Developing, and Retaining Quality Career Technical/Workforce Education (CTWE) Teachers" on Nov. 22, 2005, from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. EST. This interactive event, and previous webcasts, can be viewed on any computer with Internet access at http://www.nccte.org. Highly qualified teachers are defined in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) as those who not only possess state certification, but who also have content knowledge of the subjects they teach. In Career and Technical Education (CTE), teachers need to be competent in technical, employability, and academic skills. Additionally, high-quality CTWE teachers are essential in helping the United States develop a 21st-century workforce that will be competitive in the world marketplace. This webcast features a panel of outstanding educators who will discuss high-quality secondary and postsecondary CTWE teachers in terms of how they are defined and how they can be recruited, developed, and retained. The presenters for this webcast include: Gary Briers, Professor, Texas A&M University; Nancy Headrick, Assistant Commissioner, Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education; and Carol Lanning, Senior Director for Program Planning and Accountability, Illinois Community College Board. Briers has served Texas A&M University as a faculty member since August 1980. He came to Texas A&M as an associate professor of agricultural education and is currently professor of agricultural education. He has served as associate department head of academic programs from 1993 to 2005, and as interim head of the Department of Agricultural Education from 1991 to 1993. From 1981 to 1992, he directed teacher education programs in the Department of Agricultural Education. Briers currently serves as a member of the teacher education staff in his department and gives leadership to the knowledge area of research tools, measurement, and data analysis. He has published widely in the area of teacher education and preparation, particularly in the Journal of Agricultural Education. Briers received a bachelor's and a master's degree in agricultural education from Texas A&M University and earned his doctorate in agricultural education from Iowa State University. He is a former teacher of vocational agriculture in the Sweeny (Texas) Independent School District and a former faculty member at Iowa State University in agricultural education and secondary education. While at ISU, he directed the teacher education and certification program in the Department of Agricultural Education. Nancy Headrick is the Assistant Commissioner for the Division of Career Education with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Headrick has been employed with the department since 1984. For 10 years, she served as Supervisor of Family and Consumer Sciences Education and as State Advisor of Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America. Since 1994, she has served as Assistant to the Commissioner of Education. Headrick has a bachelor's degree in home economics education from Northwest Missouri State University (NSU), a master's degree in home economics education, and a doctorate in practical arts and vocational technical education from the University of MissouriColumbia. She has also completed the Strategic Leadership for State Executives Program at Duke University. Carol Lanning has nearly 20 years of academic leadership experience in higher education, including services to universities and community colleges. Prior to coming to the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB), she was Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs for the Illinois Board of Governors of State Colleges and Universitiesa system of five state universities. As Senior Director for Program Planning and Accountability at ICCB, Lanning oversees the approval and review of transfer and occupational programs for Illinois' 48 community colleges and ICCB's participation in the Illinois Articulation Initiative. She also provides leadership to the Perkins Postsecondary Program, Tech Prep and Education to Careers Program, and the development and implementation of an Associate of Arts in Teaching degree model. She is currently Interim Vice President for Instruction and Policy Studies, which includes oversight responsibility for the instructional technology and policy study areas of ICCB. Lanning holds a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a master's degree in public administration. She also holds a current Illinois teaching certificate and has taught at both the elementary and middle-grade levels.
