Hi Dottie Have a look at a publication we developed that has a model for discussing ROI with employers http://www.workbase.org.nz/Document.aspx?Doc=VoicesfromManagementJan2003 Final.pdf Also there is some Australian research - the only piece done there specifically on benefits of literacy programmes called More Than Money Can Say - we have the Executive Summary on our website - the rest of the research is not available online. http://www.workbase.org.nz/Document.aspx?Doc=1996-mtmcs.pdf The UK NRDC Website that someone else mentioned does have an earlier publication - a literature review- looking at business benefits of workplace literacy which was inconclusive but it didn't look at the stuff we had done And now they have printed something showing the productivity benefits of workplace literacy projects Both reports are on this page http://www.nrdc.org.uk/content.asp?CategoryID=424 Hope this is helpful Susan Reid Workbase the New Zealand Centre for Workforce Literacy www.workbase.org.nz www.nzliteracyportal.org.nz -----Original Message----- From: englishlanguage-bounces at nifl.gov [mailto:englishlanguage-bounces at nifl.gov] On Behalf Of Dottie Sent: Wednesday, 8 March 2006 5:10 p.m. To: The Adult English Language Learners Discussion List Subject: [EnglishLanguage] Workplace ESL research Colleagues -- can anyone direct me to current research on the benefits (esp. financial) to an employer/business of offering/profiding ESL classes to employees? My daughter is an IT consultant; her newest client is a shipping company that hires independent truckers. The potential employees base has changed to include mostly eastern European & Latino immigrants. Unfortunately, their English skills are lower than the company wants/requires. My daughter wants to convince the employer that it'll be cost-effective for them to have on-site ESL classes. [That's my kid!] However, she needs "evidence" to backup her argument. I just searched the CAL site & couldn't find anything --did I miss something?
