Thanks so much for the great ideas.  Let me run this by the group to get
some feedback.  I will assess the literacy levels of the students, but my
experience with this population is that a large share are going to fall into
the functionally illiterate category.  This suggests to me that I should
rely more on visual presentations rather than written.  For example, I could
photo a lot of the things that the retail store sells and then display those
pictures while saying and sounding the word.  In this case, interpreting the
written words, either "Shirts" or the Spanish phonetic equivalent, "churts"
would be a secondary, or extension, to word association with the visual
image.   I'm feeling somewhat ambiguous about this because it does not feel
like literacy.  
 
So what does the group feel about 1) the primary reliance on visuals in a
workplace training setting, and 2) is this literacy, or does it just provide
access to a limited set of English that does not have a sequence to higher
language?
