Subscribers, I have begun trying to send each new subscriber to the Workplace Literacy Discussion List a welcome and an invitation to introduce themselves to the list. Find below the reply/introduction of Michael Gyori. Welcome, Michael! I notice from your website (see URL in Michael's signature line) that your program does offer some workplace skills training, though it doesn't seem to be your main focus. Is this offered as a separate class or focus, or is it offered in conjunction with some of the other content areas, say, ESOL training (which you seem to have a lot of)? And another question I have for you: What do you hope to be able to find and use on the Workplace Literacy Discussion List? Thanks for taking the time to introduce yourself. Donna Brian, moderator National Institute for Literacy Workplace Literacy Discussion List djgbrian at utk.edu ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I've been in the field of second and foreign language education for 30 years. I am a first-generation immigrant. My mother tongue is Hungarian, and English is my third and, having been educated in American and British schools, educationally dominant language. I attended universities in France, Germany, Mexico, and California, and also studied in Israel. My graduate work is in TESOL / educational linguistics. After working with Berlitz for six years in Germany and Switzerland in the 70s and 80s, I decided to exit corporate life. My wife, who is from Ankara, Turkey, and I ended up settling on Maui in 1983. In 1986, I started the ESL program at Hui Malama Learning Center, a (in the meantime) sizeable and multi-faceted non-profit community-based organization (CBO). Except for two years of further study in California, I have been in charge of that program ever since. I work with a very broad range of non-native English-speaking students in terms of socioeconomic, national, educational, and linguistic backgrounds. I am also in partnership with the Hawai'i Department of Education as a CBO adult education provider, as well as public schools to help promote the educational, social, and personal success of immigrant students by means of ESL family literacy programs.
