Jim,
This is a staet model for NC; I would love to see it become a national
model. The City GUARANTEES the interview for a promotion. Right now
they can't even get that far. And the City has pisked these folks
because they WANT to promote them. They know their work ethic, etc. As
a matter of fact, we already have 1 promotion!!!!!!

It sounds really promising, but I'm curious as to how the city would
implement this special consideration for future job opportunities and
promotions.

"Promoting Workforce Development;

Promoting Your Workforce"

The Workplace Basic Skills Program at CPCC provides reading,
math, GED Preparation and English as a Second Language classes for local
business and industry. The Workplace Basic Skills program has added a
new initiative - Workplace Pathways. The purpose of the Workplace
Pathways Program is to provide incumbent workers with the basic skills
necessary to perform their job duties at the highest possible level and
to open up new opportunities for career advancement. The Workplace
Pathways Program is customized to provide specific skill sets to
employees, so these associates can apply for promotions within their
organization. The Program is designed by community college staff,
managers, supervisors, and selected employees. This new program is open
to all employers in Charlotte-Mecklenburg. The duration of the program
is from one to four semesters - depending on program content.

The Workplace Pathways Program is designed around the 5 basic
skills of reading, writing, science, social studies and math; coupled
with the development of job-specific skills such as computer skills,
supervisory skills and communication skills.

Central Piedmont Community College is partnering with the City
of Charlotte: Solid Waste Services, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities and
Department of Transportation, Street Maintenance. The program is a
hybrid of basic skills, developmental, corporate and continuing
education and curriculum classes. Students completing this program will
have curriculum credits that lead to a certificate in "Business
Workplace Skills".

There are 16 City workers in the program. This program will run
4 semesters. The City of Charlotte has agreed to give the Workplace
Pathways' graduates special consideration for future job opportunities
and promotions.

The Workplace Pathways Program can be customized for
international employees and includes classes in English As a Second
Language.
