Jim, This is a staet model for NC; I would love to see it become a national model. The City GUARANTEES the interview for a promotion. Right now they can't even get that far. And the City has pisked these folks because they WANT to promote them. They know their work ethic, etc. As a matter of fact, we already have 1 promotion!!!!!! It targets the basic skills of incumbent workers and partners with various service providers in the City of Charlotte. The flyer announcing this new service is below. Donna djgbrian at utk.edu Workplace Pathways - a new initiative at Central Piedmont Community College "Promoting Workforce Development; Promoting Your Workforce" The Workplace Basic Skills Program at CPCC provides reading, math, GED Preparation and English as a Second Language classes for local business and industry. The Workplace Basic Skills program has added a new initiative - Workplace Pathways. The purpose of the Workplace Pathways Program is to provide incumbent workers with the basic skills necessary to perform their job duties at the highest possible level and to open up new opportunities for career advancement. The Workplace Pathways Program is customized to provide specific skill sets to employees, so these associates can apply for promotions within their organization. The Program is designed by community college staff, managers, supervisors, and selected employees. This new program is open to all employers in Charlotte-Mecklenburg. The duration of the program is from one to four semesters - depending on program content. The Workplace Pathways Program is designed around the 5 basic skills of reading, writing, science, social studies and math; coupled with the development of job-specific skills such as computer skills, supervisory skills and communication skills. Central Piedmont Community College is partnering with the City of Charlotte: Solid Waste Services, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities and Department of Transportation, Street Maintenance. The program is a hybrid of basic skills, developmental, corporate and continuing education and curriculum classes. Students completing this program will have curriculum credits that lead to a certificate in "Business Workplace Skills". There are 16 City workers in the program. This program will run 4 semesters. The City of Charlotte has agreed to give the Workplace Pathways' graduates special consideration for future job opportunities and promotions. The Workplace Pathways Program can be customized for international employees and includes classes in English As a Second Language.
