Subject: [Workplace 355] Introduction from a new member

Greetings!

Donna Brian has asked me to introduce myself, as a new member of the
Workplace Literacy Discussion List.

My name is Nicole Ring, and I came to workplace education and workforce
development through adult education, teaching English for Speakers of Other
Languages (TESOL). I hold a TESOL certificate from the School for
International Training and a bachelor's degree in English from St. Mary's
College of Maryland. I have been teaching ESOL for about 3 years, including
almost 2 years in workplace education. I'm involved in some complex
projects, so here goes!

I coordinate the Customer Service ESOL program at MontgomeryWorks Sales &
Service Learning Center (SSLC). Here I teach an ESOL curriculum based on a
version of the ABE Customer Service (soft skills) curriculum from Equipped
for the Future (EFF) and the National Retail Federation (NRF) Foundation.
The class is hosted in Wheaton, Maryland, at the MontgomeryWorks SSLC, one
of the NRF-sponsored retail skills centers that are popping up around the
nation to promote careers in retail. I work closely with MontgomeryWorks,
the One-Stop system of Montgomery County Maryland, as well as Montgomery
College, the community college which employs me and another ESOL trainer. I
have been working in this program for 5 months, and am learning that this
complex partnership is unique and is a sought-after model at the federal
level. Part of my position's purpose is to bridge the workforce and the
adult ed organizations. The relationship is improving, but there's much
work to be done to strengthen that connection. Hence, I have joined this
list to become better connected to the larger field of workplace literacy.

I also own a language training business, The Language Hummingbird, Inc., (in
the greater Washington, D.C. area) which focuses on immigrant workplace
education in ESOL, especially in the landscaping and the hospitality
industries. My business partner and I are also branching into soft skills
training for at-risk youth in a contract with MontgomeryWorks partner,
Career Transition Center, Inc., a training which will result in CVS
internships for successful trainees.
