Workplace list members, The following resources have come to my attention during the past week. I try to include an abstract if one was available with the resource, and the abstracts are usually cut and pasted from the site where I got it. In all cases, if I copy an abstract to include, I credit the source and try to give a link to the original source, if it was online. Remember that if the URL extends over two lines of this e-mail, you may have to cut and past both parts into the address box to access the resource. Please read on..... Donna ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ New from MDRC <http://www.mdrc.org/index.html> Staying in Work and Moving Up Evidence from the UK Employment Retention and Advancement Demonstration Lesley Hoggart, Verity Campbell-Barr, Kathryn Ray, and Sandra Vegeris Published by the UK Department for Work and Pensions, September 2006 Employment Retention and Advancement (ERA) programmes are designed to help support low-paid workers and help them progress in work. However, the complex lives and diverse aspirations and perspectives of participants in such programmes can make it difficult to provide suitable assistance. This study addresses this challenge by exploring the relevant in-work experiences and attitudes of a sample of participants in the UK's ERA programme, a large research demonstration project currently testing the effectiveness of a new approach to post-employment support. <http://www.mdrc.org/publications/438/summary.html> ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ >From Workforce3 One <http://www.workforce3one.org/> Webinar Invitation: Competency Model Clearinghouse - Tools for Talent Development Date: October 5, 2006 Time: 2:00pm Eastern (1:00pm/Central, 12:00pm/Mountain, 10:00am/Pacific) Length: 90 minutes Description: The webinar for the Competency Model Clearinghouse was developed to provide insights about competency models and how they can be used in the Workforce Investment System to ensure that the skill needs of the business community are met. Research and empirical evidence have brought school leaders to the understanding that there must be multiple pathways to high school graduation. Among those pathways is career and technical education (CTE). The presenters will discuss recent research and best practices in CTE, as well as describe other potential strategies and solutions that schools and parents can use to encourage their students/children to stay in school. The panel will share data on real-world work connections for students and raising graduation rates. Presenters for the webcast are the following: Terry Cash, National Dropout Prevention Center, Clemson University, SC; Stephen Plank, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD; and Samuel Stringfield, University of Louisville, KY. <http://www.nccte.org/> ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ASTD's LC (Learning Circuits) Express Features How Blended Learning Changes What We Do By Allison Rossett Here's a look at blended learning, with an emphasis on what workforce learning professionals can do to convert this good idea into dependable results.
