Greetings!

I am also a new member of the nifl-workplace listserve and I work at
National Adult Literacy Database (NALD) in Fredericton, Canada. My interest
in this listserve is general, and I hope to gain information about workplace
literacy and adult education. The NALD website has quite a lot of resources
that help adult literacy teachers and learners. For example, the following
online collections - Research materials (http://library.nald.ca/research)
and Learning materials (http://library.nald.ca/learning) can be very useful
to adult education practitioners – with sections pertaining to workplace
education.

Furthermore, we have an Events calendar (http://events.nald.ca/), where we
announce events in Canada and other countries, where teachers can
participate in workshops, do professional development, etc. As an example,
the 2006 International Workplace Education and Learning Conference has been
posted. This takes place December 5 and 6 in Toronto, Ontario :
http://events.nald.ca/event/4061

Participating in listserves is a way we have of sharing information about
adult literacy and basic education. We can also increase our networking.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

I am happy to know about the Workplace Literacy Discussion List. I plan to
read and learn, and at some point I'm sure I will feel comfortable about
jumping in.

I have an Education Doctorate from North Carolina State University in Adult
Education. My dissertation study was the evaluation of a workplace literacy
program in a local industry. The participants in my study not only gained
academic competencies, they gained confidence about taking on all kinds of
new tasks, and their supervisors were very appreciative of that. The depth
and breadth of the learners' lives expanded in ways I would not have
expected!

At the time of the study, I was director of workplace literacy for my local
community college. My husband was the plant manager of the industry where
the study took place. We both felt compelled to leave our jobs and tackle
industry training together. We directed comprehensive education and
training programs for six years. The challenge of basic academic
competencies in the workplace was a constant barrier to additional training.
Our practice evolved, and now we represent Aztec Software, a self directed
program of basic academic and workforce competencies.

John, my husband, and I enjoy teaching people to use our software and
gathering information about computer assisted learning so that we can help
our users.

I am excited about joining the list, and I thank the Virginia Adult Literacy
Network for sending me the contact information.
