[Workplace 476] New report about ESOL in New York StateTara Colton tcolton at nycfuture.orgTue Nov 14 14:07:10 EST 2006
Hi everyone: I wanted to let you know about a new report released by the Center for an Urban Future and the Schuyler Center for Analysis and Advocacy finds that while immigrants have been fueling the population growth of communities in nearly every corner of the state, from Suffolk County to Syracuse, the state-run ESOL program has not come close to keeping pace with the demand. The study, titled Lost in Translation, shows that even though the states foreign-born population has grown by nearly 1.3 million since 1990, adult ESOL programs administered through the State Department of Education added only 15,000 new seats over the same period. It points out that there are long waiting lists for ESOL programs in communities all over the state. The report is online at http://www.nycfuture.org/images_pdfs/pdfs/LostInTranslation.pdf Feel free to contact me at tcolton at nycfuture.org or 212-479-3341 if you have any questions or comments about the report. Looking forward to hearing everyone's thoughts.
