Workforce issues, like so many other areas of ESL, seem to ebb and flow
in prominence over time. As we encounter new ideas and structures, we
frequently forget the value of past practices. When I wrote curriculum,
taught, and coordinated workplace ESL in the early 90's much work was
done in needs assessment, task analysis, site visit in order to develop
relevant curricula. Likewise, care was taken to develop effective
evaluation criteria and tools for measurement. Yet in the real world,
each program has individual factors that impact planning, implementation
and evaluation.

The newest Ask CAELA question is "What are factors to consider when
planning for, setting up, and evaluating a workplace program for
immigrant workers?" The answer to the question includes information
about how to conduct a needs analysis, the need to adapt curricula to
specific learner and worksite needs, and what elements to consider in
assessment and evaluation. This Ask CAELA includes an interview with
CAELA Associate Director and workplace expert Miriam Burt. To find out
more about issues to consider in workplace ESL, go to
