[Workplace 609] New York Times story highlights growing need for ESOLTara Colton tcolton at nycfuture.orgTue Feb 27 12:09:35 EST 2007
I'm pleased to let you know that a study the Center for an Urban Future published in November documenting the growing unmet need for English-language instruction in every corner of New York State was featured in an article on the front page of this morning's New York Times. The article, "Demand for English Lessons Outstrips Supply," is online at http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/27/education/27esl.html?hp and examines the growing need for ESOL services both in New York and throughout the nation. The article cites the findings of Lost In <http://www.nycfuture.org/images_pdfs/pdfs/LostInTranslation.pdf> Translation (http://www.nycfuture.org/images_pdfs/pdfs/LostInTranslation.pdf), the Center's study which found that while immigrants have become a growing part of New York's workforce, the state-run ESOL program has not come close to keeping pace with the demand.
